Michael Gurian, PhD, is a therapist, educator, and bestselling author. In his book, Boys and Girls Learn Differently!: A Guide for Teachers and Parents, Gurian shows how the growing child’s brain works, how girls’ and boys’ brains work differently, how hormones affect these differences, and how culture influences biology. He also provides solutions and applications so that parents and teachers will be able to apply what they have learned to encourage a broader spectrum of achievement in both boys and girls. Gurian’s work has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, and Time, and on Today, CNN, and National Public Radio. He is the co-founder of the Michael Gurian Institute, which administers training in child development and education.

Gail Steketee, PhD, professor and interim Dean at the Boston University School of Social Work, has conducted many research studies of the psychopathology and treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, panic and Obsessive Compulsive spectrum conditions, including body dysmorphic disorder and compulsive hoarding. She holds current National Institute of Mental Health grants to study aspects of compulsive hoarding and cognitive and behavioral treatment for this syndrome. Steketee has published more than 160 articles and chapters on OCD, anxiety and related disorders, including seven books. Her most recent work includes Cognitive Approaches to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Compulsive Hoarding and Acquiring and Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Hoarding.

Gregory Markway, PhD, a psychologist and expert in the field of anxiety disorders, is co-author of Painfully Shy: How to Overcome Social Anxiety and Reclaim Your Life. Millions of people experience social anxiety or painful shyness to such a degree that it disrupts their daily lives. As many as one out of every eight Americans will at some point suffer from what’s called social anxiety disorder, or social phobia. Learn how social anxiety disorder develops, how it affects all aspects of life, and how to chart a course to recovery. Markway, a licensed clinical psychologist, has worked in the Behavioral Medicine Department at the Washington University Medical Center and was on the clinical faculty at the Washington University School of Medicine. He currently works in St. Mary’s Health Center’s Mental Health Services in Jefferson City, Mo.

Tracy Thompson is the author of The Ghost in the House: Motherhood, Raising Children and Struggling with Depression. Thompson, a Washington, D.C.-based journalist and mother of two, based her book on a survey of nearly 400 mothers who have suffered from major depression. It also incorporates in-depth interviews with Thompson’s own experience. Dr. Sherryl Goodman, PhD, professor of psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, is the creator of the survey on which the book is based. Goodman has spent nearly 30 years studying children of mothers with depression.
